Permanently Painted Over
This is one of several paintings that are so thoroughly painted over that it will be for future generations to find a way of revealing the original. For now we have to thank the good works of messrs Fisher and Puddephat for their colourful sketches (see below).

Allegory
The story is well known even today. In mediaeval times it was taken more seriously and was one of a suite of legends that occupied the minds of writers, teachers and pupils.
Of course the story isn’t just about a noble knight slaying a dragon on a hill in Uffington in Oxfordshire, perhaps celebrated by that white horse etched into the hillside chalk, but is obviously a reference to good overcoming evil.
Specific cases of this noble fight were portrayed widely throughout Europe and the Middle-East particularly Libya.
Thousands of manuscripts expounding these stories still exist. Not only was the language full of vitality but the illumination of the pages was also designed to jump out - even compete with the fully ecclesiastical works of the day.
The crossover to Christ trampling the serpent is also much lauded and that’s perhaps why Clopton chose to agree with his advisors that is should be included in his collection of moral paintings here in the Guild Chapel.
