The Whore Of Babylon   Thomas Fisher 1804

What It May Depict

The general idea again is that this is a warning. However not just against the obvious sexual overtones of actual prostitution but the gratuitous of acts by groups of people; indeed as wide as cities or even entire empires. Under Protestantism Rome was considered thus. The abhorrence by God is laid out in the Bible: Revelation Ch17.

The subject is huge and paintings from the time abound as well as these days.

Permanently Painted Over

This is one of several paintings that are so thoroughly painted over that it will be for future generations to find a way of revealing the original. For now we have to thank the good works of Thomas Fisher for his colourful sketch (see right).
