Father - Thomas

In the 1840s Thomas Ashwin started trading from a wharf on the canal. He was quite an entrepreneur.

He traded in:

guano,  gypsum,  lime,  bones,  oil-cakes,  linseed,  rock and agricultural salt,  stone,  cement,  blue and fire-bricks,  drainage pipes,  coal,  corn  &  hay.

Son - Manley

In 1847, after the arrival of the railways, his son Manley Ashwin had greater ambitions. Trade was good and he decided that working from canal barges was no longer economic and he needed more dry storage space. He therefore bought the lower West side of Union Street and built a very large new headquarters.
