Nottingham University have set up an extremely well researched finder for place names in the UK (yes including NIreland):   Key To English Place Names

The Ordinance Survey were the first formal map makers in the world. Our explanation of their, and other grid systems, is here:  British OS Grid Coordinates Explained

This includes a link to a coordinate finder.

On opening the link you may type in any place name or select a county

Places in their database are identified with a red dot

Zoom into a detailed map and clicking a red dot to see the etymology of the name

We encourage you to consult our six sections of:  Other Organisations & Societies

2. Enter place name

1. Select Ordinance Survey

Drag with mouse.

Zoom with +/- or Mouse Wheel

Turn Adverts Off

Select “Local Guide” (the panel on the left) and hit the X in the top right.

There may be two levels of ads so you may need to hit it again.

To return to Master Page click on ‘Help’ above.

Free To View OS Version

If unhappy with this map then here is a much pared down version their own OS maps:  OS Maps Website

Limitations

It contains cycle routes but crucially for some does not have contour lines nor the rich colour scheme. The full version is available for 5 devices for £35/yr here: OS Subscriptions

As I cycle in the country a lot I have paid for several OS maps for my mobile phone: See your favourite mobile app store.
