History
We are indebted to Richard Thomas for the following (see also the shortcut above)..
“The Market Cross was erected 1381, when it was called the High Cross, at the corner top of Bridge St between High St and Wood St.
It is believed that a bell was hung therein after 1470. It is known a bell existed here in 1616. Remarkably his bell was cast nearly 300 years before in London 1320-30 by Robert de Wymbis. From its ecclesiastical nature it was probably destined for a church.
There was already a clock here, dated 1440, whose bell was transferred to the Market House in 1822. It stayed there until 1964 (incorrectly given as 1960 on the plaque).
The bell was stored in Leicester for a while and then hung in the first Bell Court Shopping Precinct. When this centre was completely rebuilt in 1980‘s it was then hung in the new centre-piece structure designed to carry it.
It was later moved to its present position under cover. Bell Court was developed by Star Developments who have since gone bust.”
