Whilst the spa was making it’s way successfully there was still the grand plan to unveil: Stratford was to get a new suburb and the sale of its properties was to be the men’s grand pay-off.
Land Purchase
In 1844, with their hopes buoyant, they bought a fairly large section of land between Bishopton Lane and Birmingham Road and called it Victoria Terrace (shown green below). They subdivided it into 13 large plots and put them up for sale as new development land. Again they advertised widely.
Recap Stage 1
Let’s just recap. In 1834 four wealthy Stratford men had successfully got a rather delightful spa together. They were:
•John Branston Freer
•William Oaks Hunt
•Edmund Derby Ford
•William Burbon
The spa was just Stage 1 in their master plan. Shown outlined in blue below. For more detail use shortcut at top of page.

Disappointing Sales
To the men’s chagrin only two of the plots sold. Of those William Burbon himself bought one of them, Bishopton Lodge* (on far right of map), and that wasn’t even in the main conurbation. The other was Linden House.
By 1850, having dropped their prices, someone called Potts bought the land to make the grand Bishopton House. This was later called The Manor and confusingly some other building has now been called Bishopton House !
