Discovery Of The Purpose
Sometimes you just get lucky. Whilst in a conversation a friend they said that they had heard that NC Joseph had had a tunnel between their works and Timothy’s Bridge Road so that finished aluminium products could be taken for final packaging and loading onto trucks. However they were vague as to where this tunnel was.
In April 2024 I was visiting Screwfix on my bike and saw a workman wearing a HiVis jacket. I don’t know why but I decided to stop and ask him if he had ever heard of a tunnel in the area. He was surprised, anybody would be, but he then surprised me more. He said “Actually, yes, I used to be a forklift driver for NC Joseph. There was one but you’re looking in the wrong place.” He gave directions and I found it !

The entrance is obviously blocked off by strong metal fencing to prevent trespass onto railway land and immediately ahead is a metal cabinet with the following label:
“Stratford North - Point Heating Distribution Cubicle”

On the satellite view to the right it is shown in red going under both the old broad gauge trackbed (shown orange dotted) and the current standard gauge track (orange) from the junction of Hamlet Way and Ophelia Drive towards where Unipart built their warehouse.
The land drops away steeply in order to dive under the railway.
