History

So called because a small stream trickled down it’s centre towards a pond, or mere, on the SE side of Rother Street (outside where NatWest is now).

David Mills adds..

  1. “This is Meer Pool Lane, original name, from when a stream or spring flowed from somewhere near library passage across the road [Henley Street], flowed up Meer Pool Lane, turned the corner by Nat West Bank, crossed over Wood Street where there was a little bridge, went across and along Rother Street towards Ely Street.

  2. It was gone by c.1850, either diverted underground or dried up.”
