Our Up-To-Date Museum

Many years ago I spent 6 months working on the the Tomorrow’s World TV programme. At that time the producers were scathing of the idea of museums -they saw them as anachronistic inflexible behemoths. I took that as a bit of a personal injury because I so loved those places of discovery. However deep down, at that time, there may have been some truth in their derisory comments.

Perhaps due to dwindling attendance, or just plain new blood, fortunately a significant proportion of British museums have re-invented themselves. If Stratford’s museum is going to have money spent on it then we’d better understand how to not just make it good but lead the way with new innovative ideas. We need to build on what currently exists so here are a few snapshots with personal comments about them.

Alcester Local History Museum

Pros

  1. Free. One single room. Run by volunteers. Bright. Plenty of space for groups. Simple VR archaeological dig. Dressing up area for school children. Combined with the library to cut costs.

Cons

  1. Few. Mainly focused on Roman era. All static exhibits (except for the video screen)

Overall Feel

  1. Makes exceedingly good engagement with visitors and good use of the space.

Plymouth - The Box

Pros

  1. Free. A ‘designer museum’ which turns the whole idea on it’s head. Winner of 22 major awards. Superb use of space. The archive strong rooms were added to the roof hence the name. Whilst it has hundreds of display cabinets they are illuminated against black walls so one’s eyes are not laboured. There are many video screens and clever use of focused audio from the ceiling so that you walk into regions of commentary yet there is no general hubbub but no need to wear headphones or use a guide device. Doesn’t just concentrate on Plymouth’s naval history. Maps are interactive flat screens on their back. Includes significant art exhibitions. Wedding receptions offered out of hours.

Cons

  1. None. There is a huge staircase at the main entrance so those with difficulties must use the lift. Guide could be better.

Overall Feel

  1. Again makes exceedingly good engagement with visitors and good use of the space. You will want to go back.
