Thomas Nash (1593-1647), Lord Of Shottery was a renowned  lawyer of the day. He was the first husband of Elizabeth Hall (1608-70. Shakespeare’s granddaughter by Sussanah). His was the house next door to Shakespeare’s family home (now known as New Place).

When he died she married John Bernard in 1649 and throughout the marriage she lived at Abington Manor in Northamptonshire.

Nash had inherited The Bear Inn, in Rother Street, and a property in Bridge Street. It has not been possible to find any images of this house earlier than these below (see Archive below for a few more current pictures).

Judging by the size and appointment of the interior lawyer Nash had considerable wealth.

A photograph from 1860 shows a modest portico. However a painting of 1910 shows it without.
