History
In 2007 a proposal was put forward for a new river crossing to be built. The idea was to provide quicker access, for pedestrians and wheelchair users, to move between the Recreation Ground car park and the town.
Citing the ruination of such an historic and idyllic scene it was rejected.

Soon afterwards the District Council proposed a new location, just downstream of the ferry, and that also was rejected.
