Shakespeare Historian
Stanley was brought up in Kingston-upon-Hull. Having always had a passion for English he taught in Hampshire for many years. He decided to move to Stratford to take up deeper study of his passion at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford gaining his PhD in 1961. He became its overall Director in 1988.
His researches have debunked the theories that it was persons other than Shakespeare who wrote his material -although collaborations were often. According to Wikipedia..
“Wells was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2007 Birthday Honours for services to literature. He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to scholarship. Wells was awarded an honorary DLitt by the University of Warwick in 2008. In 2016, he was awarded the President's Medal by the British Academy "for his lifetime service to the study, knowledge and enjoyment of William Shakespeare" “
He remains active in the town and is so gracious to all who meet him.
