Another prominent business in the town was the Hutchings family. Their premises were at the widest part of bridgefoot.
To their right was The Unicorn Hotel. In recent times this was renamed The Pen & Parchment pub.
To their left was a modest garage -more of this later..

Hutchings’ Yard in 1930
Sadly the whole yard was demolished and lay dormant. Eventually it was tarmac’d and used as the town’s bus terminal. The garage became the mess room for the drivers.
In the late 1960‘s the building was rebuilt and converted in The Red Lion pub still with buses going round it (below).
The coal was brought by canal from Staffordshire.
The Great Depression saw the yard go out of business and became derelict.
In late 1980‘s the use as a bus terminal ceased. Greene King bought the land and extended the pub to what we see today.
