Like so many towns and villages throughout Europe, which were made of wood and thatched, modest little Stratford suffered house to house fires. Those of 1595 and 1595 destroyed much of the town centre. In 1596 this plot of land was bought by butcher Thomas Rogers.

Judging by the height and ornate carvings, and with an increasing population, Rogers must have made a lot of money. He was a trustworthy man and was first made a Burgess, then Alderman and later the Town’s High Bailiff.

His daughter, Katherine, is recorded as marrying Robert Harvard (of Southwark, London). In due course they had children and their son John emigrated to America to set up a school of learning which developed into the renowned Harvard University that we know now.

Harvard House at 26 High Street

Unfortunately, as so often in the Victorian age, the house was left and became derelict.

It wasn’t until 1909 that our unsung hero Marie Corelli persuaded Edward Morris (of Chicago, USA) to buy it and completely renovate it. To recoup some of his cost he charged for entry.

He then passed it into ownership of the university. For years Stratford Birthplace Trust administered it until 1990 when they assumed full responsibility for it. In recent years they undertook a process of conservation and it is now used for teaching.
