History

Donated by American book and newspaper publisher and world philanthropist George W. Childs, of Philadelphia, to commemorate William Shakespeare and to celebrate Queen Victoria's 1887 Diamond Jubilee.

It incorporates horse and cattle troughs above smaller ones for dogs and sheep (now filled with flowers) and a drinking fountain.

A good example of Victorian Gothic style it was completed in 1887 to a design by artist Jethro Anstice Cossins of Birmingham (1830-1917).
