History
Edith Monroe-Devis and her husband, Stephen, were a talented business family in Leamington Spa and made significant donations to local charities. In 1935 they bought a large house with 3½ acres of land in Carters Lane Tiddington named Rivermead.
After the premature death of her husband she continued in business but retired to Bournemouth. In 1945 she donated this house to Warwickshire County Council to be used as a Maternity Home stipulating that it must bear her beloved husband’s name.
The home was successful coming within the South Warwickshire branch of the Birmingham Regional Health Board. In 1948 it was subsumed into the NHS at it’s outset. It was managed from Warneford Hospital in Leamington.
The hospital operated until 1985 when it was finally closed. The site was bought by a developer and several luxurious houses were built leading down to the river..
