History
The building started life in 1830 as two very large villas (Nos 14-15) each with stucco frontages. In 1852 they formed the town’s first Catholic Chapel. From 1857, according to the Playhouse website:
“For a short while the buildings were a school.
In 1876 they opened as Stratford-upon-Avon Convalescence Home.
In 1940 they became a maternity hospital (133 babies born in first 6mnths).
With the advent of the NHS in 1948 the building was sold to Stratford Corporation for office space.
In 1985 the auditorium at the rear was added and the building became a community venue known as the Civic Hall.”
In 2014 it was renamed Stratford Art House after a £1M complete make-over and installation of good technical facilities.
A separate account says that it was a hospital from 1872-1929.
