Laser Imaging, Detection And Ranging
This is a huge subject. It enables the calculation of distances very accurately by measuring how long it takes for a beam of laser light to go and return from the object. Information about the distance of objects invisible to the naked eye may be resolved by using non-visible wavelengths. A huge range of distances can be measured from the short distances between molecules to the positions of terrain on other planet. By calibrating the equipment, placing it on an aircraft or satellite and scanning the laser the shape of terrain and man-made objects can be discerned.

Archi-UK
There are many companies operating in this field. In the UK the government’s Environment Agency has surveyed the whole country. To access this the most user friendly way found so far is to use Chris Kutler ‘s educational search engine Archi-UK. Chris’s aim is to make the software free at initial point of use but asks regular users to donate so that he doesn’t have to resort to adverts.
Archi-UK Example
This is the terrain around the Welcombe Hotel. Clearly both the River Avon and the A439 Warwick Road can be seen diagonally crossing the image. Usefully a slider can be used to partially, or fully, superimpose a Openstreetmap (see right).
Archaeological Site Finder
1.Oddly the finder only leads to the Homepage: Archi-UK
2.Enter a place, Postcode or British Grid Coordinate
3.There may be several thousand results for every artifact found at that location (eg SP2088956640).
Old Maps
Instructions are given on how to search for each of 9 kinds of map.
Lidar
I found this unnecessary but it has two detailed search modes.

The Environment Agency
Their remit covers 13 million hectares of land, 35,000 km of river and 5,000 km of coastline including 2 million hectares of coastal waters. Whilst the Ordinance Survey have spend several centuries documenting the geography of the world especially Britain given the requirement for the EA manage Britain’s environment, especially precipitation,it is not surprising that they produced a hugely accurate Lidar map to work from. To manage their workload they have 10,000 highly qualified staff.
Headquartered in Rotherham their website is vast: EA
