Edward Fordham Flower’s Family Home

With the ongoing success of his brewery by 1856 Edward had purchased a considerable amount of land high above the River Avon enroute to the Welcombe Hotel on the Warwick Road to the East of the town. According to Our Warwickshire (see below) the architect possibly Milner.

He then commissioned “The Hill” and added beautiful trees and gardens to complement its luxury. Potting sheds for the garden and a Conservatory were added at the rear. These have since been demolished to make way for more modern building units.

At the entrance to the 4.5 acre estate was a security Lodge. At the top of the long sinuous drive the mansion rose above stepped terraces, pleasure grounds and a maze. Below were paddocks and a wind pump to supply water to the house and gardens.

In the 1980’s Shakespeare Birthplace Trust divided it into five separate assured tenancy flats comprising 12 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. In 2022 it was put up for sale at £2.1M but as of 2024 it remains unsold.
