History
Very rarely is there so much detailed information about a mediaeval family, however in this instance, a huge amount is documented.

Whilst various organisations focus on the Cloptons around the time of Shakespeare that is not what this website is about so it’s a good opportunity now to introduce the seminal work by the family themselves through The Clopton Family Genealogical Society (see link below). In their own words:
“The Clopton Chronicles is a collection of lengthy essays and genealogies published at this site after they are released to our members. Each essay is well researched and extensively documented.”
They are not understating the size of this work. So far there appears to be 26 webpages of thoroughly researched family information Just the first page gives marvelous detail in 4900 words but you will need to be methodical how you read the whole body of it. The main author makes it quite clear that it is not a foregone conclusion that these Cloptons are related to the Cloptons of Long Melford, Suffolk (see SLHS Heraldry).

Hugh Clopton - Stratford’s Benefactor
STT now distribute a new series of 4min videos from the point of view of one of Hugh’s apprentice painters. They are published by the Guild Chapel Trust with help from many others and describe the large number of significant contributions that bachelor Hugh Clopton (more information than wikipedia), slightly devious merchant and later Lord Mayor Of London, made to the town. More for entertainment the videos merely give an entertaining summary of a few sections of his life but don’t scratch the surface of his full history.

But what you may be most interested in is the early origins of the family. From here you will read of Guillaume Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham, which is where the name comes from:
However, in the end, what you are probably looking for is details of:
GUNPOWDER PLOTS
Fourth Gunpowder Plot
There is ample evidence to show that the Catholic Cloptons of the 1570‘s were plot sympathisers. Indeed the Chronicles elucidate that here:
For a great more detail on each of the four different plots see here:
Clopton became apprenticed to the London mercer, John Roos, in 1456/7 and a member of the Company of Mercers in 1463/4, in which he served as a warden. He began to hold civic office within the city, being elected Alderman for Dowgate Ward in 1485, Sheriff in 1486 and Mayor in 1491.
A fuller précis of their history will be coming soon..
