History
Given the sheer numbers of clergy required to operate the churches in the bishopric in 1353 Ralph de Stratford founded an ecclesiastical college on land opposite the town’s main church purchased from Stratford Manor (later demolished to make Clopton House) (See Note 1 in download below).
It was a grand affair between where the Methodist Church and the Holy Trinity Parish Centre are now.

Demolition And Construction Of Elmhurst
As explained in the information on the Churches Master Page their dissolution by Henry VIII in 1534 was catastrophic and the Ecclesiastical College must have struggled to maintain it’s income.
By 1799 it had served it’s purpose well but had been boarded up for a long time. In 1799 it was bought by Edmund Battersbee. Much to the dismay of the town he dismantled it and erected a completely new dwelling Elmhurst built at the SW of the site.
The interior looked like this.
The layout of the gardens was beautiful.
