History
From November 1826 five people met behind James Cox's house at 8-9 High Street. In 1832, ten members signed the articles of faith and a Constitution and James Cox, was made the first Deacon. James purchased the land and drew up plans for a church building at Payton Street. In 1835 they laid the foundation stone - a few months later it was complete (see building at left above).
In 1836 Samuel Cox (James’ brother, aged 35) was the first adult to be baptised in the Chapel. In 1837 Rev James Cubitt was appointed the first Minister.
In 1861, construction of the school (central building above) started. In 1880 four extra class rooms were added.
In 1972 the building received Grade II Listing.
