History

It‘s rare that any business venture just suddenly appears out of the blue and it is certainly true here that the idea had beginnings 90 years before we see any real attempt to exploit this opportunity. Here’s the timeline..

The Bishopton Gang Of Four

In 1834 four men got together with a proposal:

  1. John Branston Freer

  2. William Oaks Hunt

  3. Edmund Derby Ford

  4. William Burbon


At that time both Leamington and Cheltenham were attracting many wealthy families to their spas and the towns were renamed accordingly. They felt that in time Bishopton, with it’s proud waters, could also take up that accolade. They built a fairly grand house. To one side, in another building, fed by two of the springs they installed pump and purification apparatus.



- Justice Of The Peace and Mayor in 1856 (lived in the massive Trinity House in Chapel Street);

- Lawyer and Town Clerk;

  1. -Banker and Mayor in 1841;

  2. -Businessman and entrepreneur.

William Hunt

● Queen Victoria’s 18th Birthday Spent here: 24th May 1837

● First time the name Victoria is associated with anything

1744

  1. Publishes his analysis of the waters just south of Bishopton Hamlet.

  2. He recommends that the waters be used in a “commodius” way in such a “delightful” setting

1745

  1. Makes his analysis and agrees with Perry that the town should “bring their waters into reputation”
